Using nature to boost self-esteem

Ecotherapy is the name given to a wide range of programmes that aim to promote good mental and physical wellbeing through outdoor activity in a green environment.

Being able to connect with nature has positive mental health benefits. And it has been shown that being more active in green environment can boost your mood and self – esteem far more than simply exercising alone.’

Some of the benefits people say they get from ecotherapy:

  • reduced stress levels
  • reduced depression
  • improved self-esteem
  • given them the confidence to meet new people
  • provided interesting activities to get involved with
  • improved mental health without focusing on it
  • built up reslience
  • gently increased their physical activity
  • enabled them to positively help the environment
  • been really enjoyable and fun!

Ecotherapy has a real impact on people’s mental and physical wellbeing, and that it provides access to education and training, increases social connectivity and enjoyment of community green spaces and the natural world.

This may seem like stating the obvious as generations of people have recognised the benefits of taking a walk in the countryside, digging up a good potato crop in their garden or observing leaping salmon, but there’s a growing realisation amongst the health community that ecotherapy is a practical (and often more economical) alternative to medication programmes.

At Livability Holton Lee we have been practising ecotherapy methods for many years and our grounds allow us to develop and offer a range of outdoor activities in an attractive, wildlife rich, peaceful environment.
